Child Labour in Fisheries in South Sudan
Project

During the Malakal assessment conducted by ARDA, interview with the children working by the river side point to a number of challenges children face more especially in the cleaning activities and fishing activities that they participate in. These activities often expose them to hazardous working conditions that could causes illnesses and also long working hours that interfere with their education. The findings highlight that child labor in the sector is largely driven by poverty, household livelihood pressures and limited awareness of child protection standards. The assessment underscores the need for targeted interventions that strengthen community awareness, promote safe and decent livelihood for adults and youth and align local practices with national and international frameworks on the elimination of child labor in fisheries in South Sudan.
